There are many beautiful towns to visit in the area. Here are a few of our recommendations or click the links in the menus on the right. One tip…remember that shops, churches and museums close at 1:00 pm and don’t open up again until 4:00 or later. So if you really want to get the most out of these towns, be sure to get an early start. Also be aware that many restaurants don’t open until 1:00 for lunch.
Orvieto – A 50-minute drive along Lake Corbara. This town has cute shops, the most beautiful Duomo in Umbria and some fantastic restaurants.
Montefalco – Although it is not far by miles, this beautiful drive will take almost an hour due to the winding small roads. The town is adorable and surrounding the area are wineries known for their Montefalco Rosso.
Spello – If you want a quintessential Umbrian town and gorgeous photos. Go here.
Perugia – If you are looking for more of a city-scene yet full of medieval history, Perugia is perfect. It’s also a university town so it has a youthful vibe.
Todi – Our nearest “big” town. It doesn’t have any major tourist attractions but it is a great representation of a medieval hill town. It has two lovely churches and some good restaurants.
Deruta – It’s known for the fabrication of ceramics which families have been doing there for hundreds of years. The town isn’t much but you can visit all the studios where they hand paint the ceramics and purchase if you are interested. My favorite is FIMA but just take a drive down the main road off the highway and you’ll see plenty to visit.
Assisi – Of course the main draw in Umbria is Assisi where the famous St. Francis created the Franciscan order of Monks (and also for whom the current pope has taken his name. ) It really is a beautiful town. You’ll get the most out of a visit to the Basilica of St. Francis with a guide but if you don’t feel like taking the time it’s still worth seeing.
Some Sights Nearby – Wineries and a unique church.
Monte Castello di Vibio – The town above our house!
