Orvieto is a lovely town in Southwestern Umbria on the border with Tuscany. It has etruscan origins and was built high atop a giant volcanic rock. The big sight to see here is the duomo which was begun in 1290. The town has some nice shops. My favorite is a men’s and women’s clothing shop near the duomo that sells samples. Luckily the sample size is about a 6 and I can usually find a fun dress.
Parking: Set your GPS to Parcheggio Piazza Cahen. There is typically plenty of parking under shade trees. Feed the meter (Euro 1.50 per hour) for as long as you plan to stay, press the green button, and place the printed ticket on your dashboard. As you look towards the town, take the street to the left of the parking lot. This street Corso Cavour will lead you to the duomo (follow signs).
Orvieto also has some great restaurants. Two of our favorites:
If you want something light, try Bottega Vera Enoteca. It’s a stylish little wine and cheese shop where you can order a cheese and meat board (called tagliere) and try a delicious variety of wines or craft beers. Be sure to ask for some pairings. I had this unique cheese called Fossa which was a bit weird on its own but tasted great with one of their Rose wines. It is located on the main street near the duomo.
For delicious and traditional umbrian cooking, go to Antica Cantina. You will pass it on your way from the parking lot to the duomo. It’s a small restaurant with a few outdoor tables. They have daily specials which are amazing. Don’t be afraid to try something strange. The best food of our last trip was a rabbit dish.
As you are ready to leave for the day, grab a gelato from La Musa Gelateria on Corso Cavour near the parking lot.
If you are up for another adventure…drive 30 minutes further to see something spectacular. Set your GPS to Civita di Bagnoregio.
