There are many wineries throughout Umbria. Here are a few we’ve visited and enjoyed. In every case except for perhaps the large cantinas near Montefalco, you’ll need to make an appointment to visit.
Just over the one lane bridge outside Monte Castello, turn right toward a winery called Terramante. It’s a very small operation (by an American man and his Italian wife.) They make three reds and a Rose’ and I enjoyed them all for different reasons. They speak English. You’ll need to make an appointment as they are a very small operation and will set aside time from their day to meet with you.
Iacopo Paolucci – He charges about $20 per tasting and you’ll need to make a reservation. The winery is near Doglio – a short drive from the house and has a lovely view.
Madonna del Latte – This winery is in a beautiful location on the other side of Orvieto. It’s run by an Austrian man named Leon and his Italian wife. The wines are phenomenal and he only sells direct from the winery. They are pricey compared to all the others listed here. His tasting includes local cheeses and meats and is a really fun and delicious thing to do.
Terre Margaratelli – This winery gives an interesting and professional tour. They also host some fun events so be sure to check their website/instagram.
Cantina Zazzera – This is a brother/sister duo who own the cantina and also a corresponding restaurant. You can try all the wines by the glass at the restaurant and I would recommend doing that over the winery tour. The restaurant has innovative and delicious food.
Villa Bucher – This is a stunning location set outside at a greenhouse surrounded by sunflowers. The owner is Swiss and lives in Mallorca. The tasting room manager is a nice gentleman named Gian Andrea. Their wines are very unique. Not aged in oak and bottled as single varietals. You can Whatsapp him at +39 351 183 0392
Cantina La Spina – This is a very small winery that produces delicious merlot and trebbiano spoletino. The owner and winemaker gives the tour and tasting himself. +39 349 230 4108
Agri Segretum – Caroline does a lovely casual tasting with delicious cheese from Caseificio Montecristo. You need to make an appointment. We love their sparkling rose’.
There are MANY wineries in the vicinity of Montefalco. A quick google search will bring up plenty of options if you like Sagrantino. There are also a few tasting rooms in the town of Montefalco.
